Henry III de Valois autographs in Russian repositories

Abstract

The article examines the history of the publication of letters of the French king Henry III (1574–1589) from the Valois dynasty, which ruled during the culmination of the Religious Wars, in relation to the Russian part of the archive of this monarch, largely not reflected in the French edition of his letters, 1959–2018. All collections and depositories of St. Petersburg and Moscow, where the messages of Henry III were conserved, are listed, with a brief description of the autographs and their approximate number: about 400 letters of the king and at least 600 addressed to him. The names of historians and archivists, who studied the correspondence of the last Valois, are specified, as well as their contribution to the publication of his letters is also noted: P. Champion, M. François, A. D. Lublinskaya, J. Boucher. It is emphasized that a special scientific project will be required to compile a complete register of autographs of Henry III in Russia.
