The document was acquired by Nikolay Likhachev as part of the Charlemagne family archive (Archive of the St. Petersburg Institute of History, Russian Academy of Sciences. Russian section. Fond. 238. Op. 2. Cartons 121, 121a, 122), a notable part of which are letters written by St. Petersburg’s academist painter Adolf Iosifovich Charlemagne to his father, St. Petersburg’s architect Iosif Ivanovich Baudet-Charlemagne. Adolf wrote them during his trip throughout Europe in 1856–1861 where he created the canvases “Marshal Suvorov in Milan” and “Suvorov’s last night in Switzerland” (Gatchina Palace), the latter earned the author the title of academician in 1859. The present document, i.e. the letter of 12 May (30 April) 1857, was written in Munich (Cart. 121, No. 18) and is curious in that it shows several areas of application of the technical innovation, i.e. photography, in its first decades.
