Abstract

A letter from Pavel Bestuzhev has been proposed for publication, the brother of the four Decembrists, about a duel between K. P. Chernov, a member of the secret Northern Society, and V. D. Novosiltsev, the imperial adjutant, has been proposed for publication. It is a significant addition to the already well-known history and is valuable because it was written by a contemporary of the events and a person close to Decembrist circles. The letter contains a reflection of another urban legend about the horned priest. The letter is accompanied by a note by M. K. Azadovsky, who prepared P. A. Bestuzhev's letter for publication, accompanied by his comments. The publication focuses on some aspects of the behavior of the Chernov family members and their entourage regarding the protection of the family's honor.
