Current work presents previously unpublished letters from 1810–1818 written by Sergei Ivanovich Muravyov-Apostol, a Russian officer, participant in the Patriotic War of 1812 and the Foreign Campaigns, and one of the leaders of the Southern Society of Decembrists. The biographical information contained in this source provides insights into little-known episodes of his military career, as well as his youthful views on life, family values, and attitude toward military service – an occupation traditional for the nobility, but one that did not always correspond to their inclinations and desires. Financial matters, sometimes extremely pressing given the family’s precarious financial situation, also figure prominently. The letters also outline the circle of friendships and family ties of the Muravyov-Apostols in the 1810s, including their relationship with Augustin de Betancourt, the renowned scientist and statesman.
