Documents about events in Corsica in the XVIth c. in the book of G. Ribier 1666 and in the collection of Lamoignon (Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts)
Abstract
The article is devoted to a comparative analysis of the documents of the 17th century publisher Guillaume Ribier and documents from the Lamoignon foundation related to the French war for the possession of Corsica (1553–1559). Guillaume Ribier is known for publishing documents from the Laumagnon collection, which served as the basis for his famous 2-volume publication, published in 1666. The first volume is entirely devoted to the time of Francis I and is mostly filled with papers from 1537–1540. The second volume includes documents from the reigns of Henry II and Francis II (1547–1560). Ribier’s publication was his life’s work, and it included documents on the history of Corsica (1553–1559). The Lamoignon collection is kept in Moscow at the RGADA, under the number F. 81. Both the publication of G. Ribier and the Lamoignon collection are part of the departmental archive of Jean Duthier, Secretary of State to King Henry II of France (1547–1559). Both in the G. Ribier publication and in the Lamoignon collection, the documents represent the official, diplomatic correspondence of the French administrators of Corsica with the government of Henry II. The location of the documents published by Ribier is unknown. Ribier’s publication has been used and is being used by historians.
