The article provides an overview of the most important part of the scientific heritage of A. V. Predtechensky, devoted to the history of Russian society, socio-political movements and social thought of the 1st third of the 19th century. Observations on the early works of the historian and scientifically significant publications of sources prepared in the late 1920s - 1930s, primarily on the history of the Decembrists, are presented. For the first time, a comparison is made of the contents of two monographs - the unpublished book of 1949 «Essays on socio-political thought in Russia at the beginning of the 19th century» and the famous published work in 1957 «Essays on the socio-political history of Russia in the first quarter of the 19th century». Based on a comparison of the structural parts of these monographs, the history of the creation of the most important works of the historian is reconstructed, and the genetic relationship between them and the doctoral dissertation defended in 1941 is shown. The materials of the discussion of the book by A. V. Predtechensky in 1957 at the Academic Council of the Leningrad branch of the Institute of History of the USSR Academy of Sciences, stored in the Scientific-Historical archive of the St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, are introduced into scientific circulation (reviews by S. N. Valk, N. G. Sladkevich, B. M. Kochakov), provides information about the unfinished and unrealized works of the researcher. The features of the scientific approaches of A. V. Predtechensky and his methodological guidelines are touched upon, including the use of manuscripts of unpublished critical reviews by the historian. Based on the observations made, conclusions are proposed about the place and role of A. V. Predtechensky in the Soviet historiography of the social movement and socio-political thought of the 1st half of the 19th century
