Abstract

During the reign of Peter the Great, a new funeral ritual developed in Russia, which was borrowed from the mourning ceremonies of European states. The main feature of the mourning ceremony of Russian monarchs and representatives of the ruling family was publicity. In the collection of N. P. Likhachev preserved a complex of documents related to the farewell ceremony for Peter the Great. These are two brochures intended for publication with a description of the funeral ceremony and burial hall, three of the four engraved views of it, as well as a handwritten “Description of the burial hall” (published for the rst time in the appendix to the article). The manuscriptis a translation from French by S. M. Korovin. The original text is attributed to Nicolas Pineau. Analysis of the text of the manuscript provides researchers with new facts that allow them to more fully reconstruct the decoration of Castrum doloris of Peter the Great
